                  Achieving net-zero emissions requires comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting. The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, developed jointly by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), divides corporate emissions into Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy) and Scope 3 (all other indirect emissions throughout an organization’s value chain) [1].<\/p>\n

                  Scope 1-3 accounting is a way of measuring emissions from an organization’s activity, but there is a growing focus on understanding how products and services contribute to decreasing emissions outside the borders of the organization. This concept is called Avoided Emissions (AE) and is often informally referred to as “Scope 4.”<\/p>\n

        Avoided Emissions (AE)<\/strong><\/h4>\n

                  Avoided Emissions (AE) are the positive effect resulting from a comparison between the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a solution and a most likely, alternative situation where the solution would not be implemented. These options are complementary to activities that reduce an organization’s own direct and indirect emissions, while preventing emissions for other actors [2].<\/p>\n

        Defining Climate Solutions and System Boundaries<\/strong><\/h4>\n

                  Before assessing avoided emissions, companies need to clearly define the function of the solution, the target market or geographical context, and the system boundary that determines which life cycle stages are included in the assessment. The WBCSD 2025 guidance suggests two types of climate solutions:<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Intermediary solutions<\/strong> \u2014 items, materials or components that allow the manufacture or supply of other products or services with lower emissions. For example, electric vehicle (EV) batteries, blades for wind turbines, EV charging stations, and geo-location software to enhance solar installation.<\/li>\n
        2. End-use solutions<\/strong> \u2014 items or services with a positive climate impact that the end-user uses in its final form. For example, EVs, heat pumps, solar panels, animal feed supplements to reduce methane emissions, low-carbon lighting options, and software for optimizing the grid for EV charging.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Ensuring the Eligibility of Climate Solutions<\/strong><\/h4>\n

                    Before calculating and making avoided emissions (AE) claims, the WBCSD 2025 guidance recommends that climate solutions pass three eligibility gates to ensure that reported avoided emissions are credible, scientifically sound, and not misleading.<\/p>\n

          1. Gate 1 \u2013 Climate action credibility:<\/strong> The organization should have a credible climate strategy with GHG emission reduction targets that are aligned, or in the process of being aligned, with climate science and acknowledged net-zero frameworks.<\/li>\n
          2. Gate 2 \u2013 Latest climate science alignment:<\/strong> The climate solution should be based on the latest scientific information and established mitigation approaches. Avoided emissions cannot be claimed for solutions connected to the exploration, extraction, mining, production, distribution or sale of fossil fuels.<\/li>\n
